Lee and Allan think living and working abroad are really good, although we cannot point to any specific career advantages that we have enjoyed. We pick up on Ashley Imsand’s recent post and waver, with determination, forward. PR people need to be aware of cultural differences.
We then turn to Lee’s recent post about having a PR Pinup Calendar. Allan: “That didn’t go over all that well, did it?” Lee: “Uhm…. no”. Allan wonders what ole B.L. Ochman actually said. Lee explains the 18 1/2 minute gap on his tapes.
If Jimmy Wales wore a Stetson, would he be a country star?

Lee, please don’t try to do an American western accent!
More importantly though, thanks for addressing the, um, little PR calendar post you wrote. I left a comment on your blog, one that I’d like to repeat here, namely that I believe there’s an important difference between jokes that are made in person/ privately and those that are made in a public forum. And yes, it’s a very very fine line that people will draw in different places. Those of us who know you know this was not meant maliciously, but perhaps this was an example of the online disinhibition effect, was it not?
Wow! What’s a girl to do with a calendar proposition and a podcast shoutout in one week?
Thanks for the nice comments guys! I’m glad y’all saw my point in my post for Forward. Now off to soak up all this culture over here, and maybe practice some good pr here too. One small step for America’s image?
Ah, the “double entendre” podcast?
Lee, for the record, I think Allan can relate how - in our instances - people in the southern U.S. may react to your blog post about the calendar. It relates to Andrea’s comment re: public vs. private statements. In brief, we spoke about the post in our class and the students now understand that you were trying to be cheeky about the whole thing. So, all is well and yes - you are still loved by all (I think).
Congrats to Ashley for all of the well deserved shout outs. She’s a sharp lady, guys. We’re lucky she’s a student at Auburn.
Gee, my own personal podcst. I’m a lucky guy. Thanks. But, alas, I’m thinking you have many many more listeners than lil’ ol’ me.
Good program today and glad all is back right with the world. Take care.
Just picking up on the previous podcast re Second Life. For anyone who is new - like me - and is struggling to get to grips with missing walls and finding anywhere to go I have found a great new podcast - Secrets of Second Life by Franklin McMahon - it is great for taking you through tips and tricks. Mind you being based in the UK I think that I will have to go onto nightshift before I meet someone in there!!! Great show, keep it coming
Lee, Allan,
forget the VB or cheap wine sponsorship, see if you can swing a deal with http://stormhoek.com/ to sponser you.
My apologies — Martyn Davies commented about the rose petal calendar idea coming from the movie ‘American Beauty’ but I inadvertently deleted it. Sorry, Martyn!! Lee
Anna, what’s the uri for that podcast, then?
[…] Better Desirable Roasted Communications Podcast A good discussion between Allan Jenkins and Lee Hopkins about the importance of understanding cultural differences, after Lee received criticism to a blog post he meant to be tongue-in-cheek. […]
See, you do have more than one listener.
